Meaning of 'v'

The twenty-ninth consonant. The sound initially, although not exactly that of W, approaches to it so closely that this short notice of the difference will suffice; but, medially or finally, when the letter occurs in composition (with ya or ra or ha, as in dravya, vrata, vhava), or when reduplicated (as in cavvisa), the sound becomes, from the prolongation of the vowel preceding, rather the thicker sound of V. By the European literati of Bengal, and, after them, by the literati of Europe, this letter, not only in the combinations vi, vi, & ve, wherein there subsists a shade or a minimum of approximation to the sound of V, but in the whole thirteen, va, va, vi, vi, vu, vu, vr, ve, vai, vo, vau, va, ṃvh, has been mistreated as the equivalent of V;--W being ignored in the Sanskrit and its dependents because, probably, of its absence from the Latin. Hence we read Vachan, Vayu, Vichar, Vi&ntodtod;a, Veda, Vaidik &c. Too compliant with this Bengal abuse, or strangely disregardful of the pronunciation in the Maratha country, and inobservant of the difficulty, all but insuperable, of the Native learners of English to force out a V, a class of the scholars of Bombay subject va to the misrepresentation of the English V. That Vish&ntodtod;u, Veda, Gosavi, Devi, and a few other words appear thus miswritten in this dictionary is to be interpreted on the ground on which Calicut, Poona, Chandernagore &c. &c. (the corrupt representatives of kalikota, pune, ncandranagara) are suffered to hold their standing; viz. the necessity or the propriety of deferring to inveterately established, extensively prevalent, and invincibly sturdy English practice. va is frequently interchanged with o, and, on rare occasions (although, in Sanskrit, constantly), with ba. Meaning of व

The twenty-ninth consonant. The sound initially, although not exactly that of W, approaches to it so closely that this short notice of the difference will suffice; but, medially or finally, when the letter occurs in composition (with य or र or ह, as in द्रव्य, व्रत, व्हावा), or when reduplicated (as in चव्वीस), the sound becomes, from the prolongation of the vowel preceding, rather the thicker sound of V. By the European literati of Bengal, and, after them, by the literati of Europe, this letter, not only in the combinations वि, वी, & वे, wherein there subsists a shade or a minimum of approximation to the sound of V, but in the whole thirteen, व, वा, वि, वी, वु, वू, वृ, वे, वै, वो, वौ, वं, वः, has been mistreated as the equivalent of V;--W being ignored in the Sanskrit and its dependents because, probably, of its absence from the Latin. Hence we read Vachan, Váyu, Vichár, Vín̤á, Veda, Vaidik &c. Too compliant with this Bengal abuse, or strangely disregardful of the pronunciation in the Maráṭhá country, and inobservant of the difficulty, all but insuperable, of the Native learners of English to force out a V, a class of the scholars of Bombay subject व to the misrepresentation of the English V. That Vishn̤u, Veda, Gosáví, Deví, and a few other words appear thus miswritten in this dictionary is to be interpreted on the ground on which Calicut, Poona, Chandernagore &c. &c. (the corrupt representatives of काळीकोट, पुणें, चंद्रनगर) are suffered to hold their standing; viz. the necessity or the propriety of deferring to inveterately established, extensively prevalent, and invincibly sturdy English practice. व is frequently interchanged with ओ, and, on rare occasions (although, in Sanskrit, constantly), with ब.
